In post-war Sicily, the passage from a rural economy to the new industrial system promises development and affluence, but very soon the total disregard of the laws protecting man and the environment by the companies is discovered. The air is poisoned by fine dust, the water is polluted by oil, the soil is contaminated by toxic substances and the “mercury” sea is used to dump polluting waste.ÊMore and more children are born with serious physical and mental malformations, deaths caused by tumours are on the increase. The requests by citizens for the laws to be respected are ignored by the Italian government and the industries that lord it over the bay of Siracusa, the largest petrochemical pole in Europe.
