The Crastatone is a chestnuts fair, where chestnut, in Italian “castagna” becomes in slang “crastata” which means chestnut cooked directly on the fire. The “chestnut” is therefore the queen of the parties that are organized in Piancastagnaio, they are cooked and prepared in many different ways: roasted in a polenta in the shape of castagnaccio cake, boiled and in very elaborated tarts and cakes. It is a very important fair for the living in the slopes of the Monte Amiata that focuses on the importance that the chestnuts trees have in the history of this place: the village name means chestnut valley and the emblem that represents it has a chestnut tree as symbol. Also the traditional food since the beginning of ‘900 and the trade of the resistant and precious chestnut wood witness the importance the queen of the fair has for the village of Piancastagnaio village. The Crastatone is the occasion for a visit to the historical medieval town centre, rich of artistic evidences of a certain relevance; many and different opportunities to meet cultural attractions such as concerts, theatre shows, screenings and meetings, a rich billboard full of appointments; and above all the genuine food and the good wines to taste in good company. It takes places on the last week end of October and November the first and Piancastagnaio becomes an open fair.
